More on The Kings Head
My maternal grandparents, Ernest and Dorothy Bond had the Kings Head in 1955 and through to 1958
My mother was married from here at Christ the King in Steyning. I was born in 1958 and my parents then lived at a little cottage in the High Street called 'The Dilly'
Quite a few years have passed! and I have now moved back into Upper Beeding but I find it quite un-nerving that the High Street seems to look almost unchanged!

RE: RE: More on The Kings Head
My great grandparents, the Brackley's, owned the Kings Head from the late 1920s to around mid 1950s. My great grandfather was in the shipping business and his family had emigrated to Sidney to be closer to him. After several years there they sailed back to England and bought the pub with their savings. They had six children - all girls - who all worked in the pub. One of their daughters, Dorothy, married a local, wealthy farmer. My Nana Vera married Bill Coasby and after working hard they bought the Red Cow pub and the Green Plunge restaurant in Royston and later the Fourteenth Century in Baldock. We visited the Kings Head in June 2011 but there was a wedding going on and was unable to see the back garden. I had my first Shandy in there. My mom told us how the pub used to be, stairs where there now were none and it was smaller back then and how beautiful and posh her grandparents kept it. What is now a parking lot used to be a vegetable garden. We met a man who said he was the owner but he did not seem too interested in us. I know my grandparents lived in the building next door to the pub. I'm glad I got to see it. Corinne Hall, Hemet, California
