Staffordshire memories
St Lukes And Milner Girls
I was born in Leek and went to St lukes school and then onto Milner girls in Springfield road. Did anyone else out there go to either of these schools.
Evacuation
At the beginning of the war I was evacuated to Leek. I was only there until the Christmas but I remember going to school in a building called the Nicholson Institute and I stayed with some lovely people called Wagstaffe near Balls End Park. They had a shop where they sold and repaired watches. I remember that we used to go for walks on Sunday afternoons to Rudyard Lake.

Living in The Fox Inn
My Mother, Annette Mercer, lived here with her parents Margaret and Harold Mercer and siblings Roger, Lynda, Bruce and Carolyn in 1953. From here they went to Denton, Lancashire. Annette worked in the office of Wood Treatment in Biddulph. She was age 16 at the time.
Christening
I have visited the church many times, I was christened there in 1943. My parents rented a weekend cottage situated down a lane opposite the Crown Inn. They rented it prior to the war and during. After they gave the cottage up we used to stay at the Fox Inn, which was then owned by the Ralphs family. I had some wonderful times there. I wondered if anyone else remembers Rushton round about that time.
My Maiden Name
I would like to add that at this time my name was Judy Thomas
I Used to Work in The Fox Inn
I used to work in the Fox Inn with Felix (the head waiter), Salvatore, myself, Barbara Lovatt, and others that I can't remember the names of. They were the best time of my life, at the time the owner was Mr Hancock.
Ancestry
Wallhill House is the correct title of this timber framed building and it is what you might say is the ancestral home of my family. Although none of my ancestors have lived in the property since some time after 1750 they were there from before 1550 until that later date and probably built the house themselves. While living at Wallhill they were a great influence on Rushton Spencer and Leek parish in general, gaining grants of land from the Earl of Chester. Descendants of these ancestors still live on the lower part of Wallhill, which is known as Hugbridge.
