Townhill Miners Village
I am interested in family history. Many of my relatives surnamed Hunter came from the Townhill Miners Village, the earliest being William Hunter, born 1750. I have been researching the area my ancestors were miners, it was a tough life - "Clackmannanshire Miner Killed - A miner named Robert Hunter (22), married, residing at Ramsay Street, Coalsnaughton, met with a fatal accident in the underground workings of the Devon Colliery, belonging to the Alloa Coal Company. He was knocked down and seriously injured by a runaway hutch, and died on the way to the County Accidents Hospital. He leaves a widow and child." [The Scotsman 26 January 1925]- An extract from "Report on mining villages" -"There are, it is true, several instances of colliers living in houses of their own at Townhill, near Dunfermline; and I am told that Mr Stevenson, the proprietor of the neighbouring pits, takes great interest in the social well-being of his people, yet the old rows in the village over which he presides almost equal,... St Serf's School
I attended St Serf's School 1956-59. The headmaster was Mr Ward. I loved it, it was at the entrace to the village with the Miners' Institute on the other side of the road. The priest used to come in to our class on Monday mornings to find out who hadn't been to Mass on Sunday.
ROYAL AIRFORCE MEMORIES
I was at Pitreavie when it was a signals station for the Royal Navy and the RAF. We were like moles underground most of the time. The best thing about it was the warmth and the peace. We had a great crew down there, RAF and WRAF together. One of my best memories was the wedding of LAC Triggs and Corporal Sutton, WRAF. From here I was posted to RAF North Point in Hong Kong. Happy days.
Hill O Beath, my Home
Hill of Beath was a great place to stay when I was young, running round streets playing cowboys with Brayan Snedon, Ross Mickey, playing football and training with the Haws, going to the little shop on Main Street and getting a bottle of Rumco juice, mmmmm. Going up Hill O Beath Hill making camps and tree houses and playing at the humppills - a lot of mounds in the ground covered with trees, we played soldiers there. I stayed in the old prefabs there until Swintons Place was built then I moved to 47 Swintons Place next to Jammie Izat, Peter Moodie stayed across from us, Andrew Barr (sadly not with us now, died young) stayed just up the road a little. We moved up to Hawthorn Crescent when my di died James Wilson (Pim) and we stayed with my gran Cathy Wilson (Denholm). I remember Finlisons staying two doors down from us. After a while we moved to a bigger house in Dalbeath Gardens next to a family called... Read more
