More about this scene

The dominating centrepiece of the early Norman settlement, the castle with its three moats was built by Robert, Count of Mortain, the half-brother of William the Conqueror. All that now remains of the huge structure, apart from the surrounding earthworks, are the broken ruins of the 12th-century flint and mortar curtain walls within the bailey, which encompass a bowling green and clubhouse. Last occupied in 1496, it was the residence of the Black Prince, and a prison for King John II of France after the Battle of Poitiers in the mid-14th century.
