With five roads feeding into it, this famous junction (close to the access to the Queensway Tunnel under the River Mersey) is one of the busiest in the region. Much has changed since 1965. Traffic control measures mean that there is almost no legal parking in the area. The Midland Bank (right) is now a wine bar, and the Grange Hotel (left) is now known as the Charing Cross. Shop fronts have tumbled, and the 'global' names have moved in, as they have in most other large shopping areas.

I was born above the Bank on Jan 4th 1944. My grandmother (Elsie Hitchell), was caretaker/ cleaner of the bank and all of the upstairs accomodation came with the job. We lived there with the extended Hitchell family until about 1948, when I moved to a prefab in Rock Ferry with my parents. My grandmother lived above the Bank until she died in about 1960/61. She was a wonderful lady and I have fond memories of her.
My stepfather was the manager of the Grange Hotel and I used to live there until I got married. My bedroom was overlooking Charing Cross and I used to spend hours just watching the never ending stream of shoppers and business people pass below my window, also there were two public houses in view fom my window and this provided some entertainment at times.
