More about this scene

It is hard to believe that the main York to Beverley Road passes around the pond on the left. The village was built around the Manor House, later surrendered to Henry VIII after the dissolution. It was sold in 1591and later bought by the Liverpool sugar trader, Richard Watt, in 1783. His son bred horses and named the local pub the Altisadora after a St Leger winner. Another impressive residence, High Hall, was demolished in 1869, and was later rebuilt before passing to the ownership of the County Council in 1951. This also was demolished to make way for the new College of Agriculture. The almshouses we see behind the pump (centre) were taken down in 1964. We may be thankful that Mere Cottage (right), dated 1756, remains.
