Nostalgic memories of Blackpool's local history

Share your own memories of Blackpool and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Does anybody remember if there was a cafe in Blackpool from the mid to late 1950's that was called The Wheelhouse (or similar name) or a cafe that was owned by a family by the name of Wheelhouse?
I am interested to hear from anyone who lived in Seafield Road between 1956 and 1958.
I am looking for anyone who remembers Sarah(Sally) McKinnel from 1956. Sarah(Sally) was aged about 19 in 1956. In 1957/58 Sarah (Sally) was living at 29 Seafield Road, Blackpool with a Mr & Mrs John and Rose Wheelhouse and was a hotel receptionist. (I do know, that sadly, Sarah (Sally) passed away a number of years ago). She was the daughter of James and Sarah McKinnell and ...see more

I was raised in Manchester 1943-1967 when I emigrated to the US. I remember special Excursion Trains, that left from Victoria Train station to Blackpool usually on Bank Holidays. We packed jam butties and tea in a thermos and our cossies, just in case it was warm enough to go paddling in the sea. I can remember rides on donkeys and our treat was either an ice cream or a stick of Blackpool Rock. I always wanted to ...see more
My brother Tommy Nevett,my sister Annette Smith and I Sheila Kirkman nee Nevett were all christened at this church many many moons ago.
I was a student nurse at BVH. from 1966-1970, and have very fond memories of other students, especially Christine Townsend, who I last saw in the early 70s. We spent many an evening at the Gaiety bar on north pier and The Queens at Cleveleys, especially when Jimmy Rose was playing there. We all worked and studied very hard, but had lots of fun as well. In 1958 I was a pupil at Blackpool Grammar School for boys. It was in Raikes Parade. At lunchtime, some of us would sneak out of school and go down Church St and end up in Woolworths which was housed in that beautiful Art Deco building near to Blackpool Tower. The main centre of attraction in Woolies was the 'Pick'n'Mix sweet counter, where for a few coppers, you could get a quarter of your favourite sweets to take back to school.
