More about this scene

Further west the photographer looks east along the Parade with the ornate iron archway into the former Esplanade Park. On the left edge is the Royal Norfolk Hotel, rebuilt here in 1826 after the earlier one burnt down. Beyond are the buildings along the east side of West Street, formerly Hothampton Field, and after 1815 renamed Waterloo Square. It was a sheep-cropped sward well into the 1920s, but the Council then covered it in bowling greens, high hedges and municipal gardens. Francis Frith's Sussex A Century Ago

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Bognor Regis

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I remember that, I was doing my paper round, knee deep in snow , heard such a noise only to see the end of the pier disappearing in to the sea, I also remember the sea was frozen in parts Diana shilton (nee west)
I came down to Bognor with my family for a three week holiday every summer in the late 50s early 60s, first from Redhill and then from Godalming, Surrey It was mostly on the train, and the last time we came it was in our new car in 1964, before we forsook the Sussex coast for North Devon. We always stayed in a flat in Landsdowne House, on the sea front, above a row of shops between the Royal Hotel and ...see more
I remember staying at the Uplands Hotel for 2 weeks about 1956 or 57. I'm pretty sure it was in Clarence Road and run by a Mr and Mrs Spickernel,( not sure about that spelling ). I was 12 years old and had a great time. The owner had 2 daughters,Suzanne, and Elizabeth, about the same age as me.I remember going to the pictures with them.I used to keep in touch for a while after going home,,maybe about a year or ...see more
I am the daughter of Charles and Joyce Munday, both deceased; my two sisters and I grew up with the caravan park as our playground. Dad grew sunflowers all along the front of Monday's caravan park and we also owned the Green Topper Cafe just across from the caravans. I was born in Sudley Road in 1941 and I went to Villa Maria Catholic School... wonderful memories.
