Nostalgic memories of Borehamwood's local history

Share your own memories of Borehamwood and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I used to live around the corner at 108 Aycliffe Rd above the grocery store that my dad used to manage. I have great memories of playing in the the little playground and splashing about in the brook, and later buying bits for my bike and model kits from Denmar, which was on the opposite side of Leeming Rd from the picture.
The Three Ways Community Centre in Arundel Drive holds many happy memories for many people of Boreham Wood. You might be interested to know that the name came from the three, roads, Cranes Way. Manor Way, and Ripon Way. Around 1960-61, it was decided and agreed by some of the local residence committee, to try and raise funds for the building and they did this by knocking on the doors ...see more
In February 1957 a new pub was opened in Howard Drive called ‘The Suffolk Punch’ it belonged to the brewers ‘Charring & Co’. It stood directly opposite a row of shops. It had a public and saloon bar that stood either side of the off-licence. We had some great times ...see more
In the 1950s, going to the pictures was ‘the-in-thing’, not only did Boreham Wood have its own cinema; it also had its own film studios where they made many of the films that were later shown at our local cinema. When we first arrived in Boreham Wood we were not aware that there was a cinema in Shenley Road and it wasn’t until about 1953 that we started to attend the performances. The cinema named the ...see more

Tommy and Eileen’s warm friendly welcome ...see more

I remember playing games of hockey at Hillside school that we used to refer to as St. Trinians as we were lucky to escape there without too many injuries. Has anyone got any memories of the Arcade, especially the Barber's shop as I would be most interested to learn what happened to the owners.
Does anyone remember a small cafe from the late 70's, run (I think) by older ladies, that used to be in a turning off the main Borehamwood High Street, quite near the front 'studio' end of the road? I believe it was the first turning on the right, not far up from the big pub at the base of the high street. Sorry, I don't remember any street names seventies, as it's nearly 40 years ago now since I used to go there with a girlfriend from back then. Many thanks, Mike Farrier
