We are obviously well into the age of mass tourism. This photograph shows one of the late Victorian screw- driven steamers by the end of the pier. Observing this remarkably packed mass of presumably happy humanity are the occupants of a private steam launch and people in rowing boats. The two boys in the foreground seem to be more interested in setting up an oar than in the comings or goings of the steamer.
