Holy Cross Convalescent Home

A Memory of Broadstairs.

although not of the catholic faith, I was sent there to recuperate from asthma , and spent some time there, 1956- 58. I remember happy times as well as sad and lonely times, especially being far from home, and often having the feelings of not totally understanding why I was actually there, but on the whole I thing I must have enjoyed it , lots of time on the beach, as we were only a few hundred yards or so from it,that is where I aquired my first fishing rod, 7/6d as I recall, I can still picture many of the faces of my fellow inmates, John O'brien alias " Prof " and Nick Hornby, a couple of names that now and then pop up as memories, also a couple of the of the nuns, Sister Mary Eugene, and Sister Mary Valentine, by the way my name is : Kenneth Marchant,
and if anybody remembers me, please get in touch, I would love to hear from you...

I was sent to the holy cross convent in the mid 50s.
i also remember Sister Mary Eugene, and Sister Mary Valentine, also
John O'Brien ,
i was only sent there because my mother was a devout catholic and she had health problems and she could not cope with my younger brothers rebellious ways so i had to go as well..
i had some good and bad memories, i enjoyed gardening as i had a little plot of my own. remember flying a big box kite i think it was some sort of kite left over from the war as it was bright yellow, i remember we used to play bulldog in a big hall,
also i remember one of the nuns was a bit sadistic as a few of us kids where laughing about something i don't remember what but i remember being made to kneel in front of a big steel radiator and i was still giggling and this particular nun hit the back of my head and bashed my forehead into the rad ,,i had a lump on the front of my head the size of a golf ball.. but i still had to remain kneeling for what was ages. i used to remember for supper we had hot chocolate and bread and butter ,,also i remember the long dormitory we slept in and the nun had a little room at the end,
By the way my name is James (Jim) Smith, my brothers name is David
some of my other memories are,,
we found a dead shark on the beach another time the beach was covered with jellyfish .
i remember the railway track ran along the back where our little gardens were i remember the tennis court and learning to play tennis,.
hope someone remembers and reply's with other memories..?
From 1958 - 1962 I was at Holy Cross concert in Broadstairs (and at Port Regis too). Happy times for me and my brother after our Mom died and our Dad was incapable of caring for two small boys. I, too, remember Sister Mary Valentine - vaguely. I mostly remember walking along the beach between Ramsgate and Margate and watching all the birds. A hobby I still have today. I think one of the nuns must've encouraged me in this. I thought the nuns were mostly kind and I was sad to leave, especially with what came next: Royal Wanstead School in London! My best wishes to any surviving pupils at Holy Cross - David Hyde
I remember the gardens where we grew vegetables and looking out the windows in the evening to see a Short-eared owl on the fence against the sunset! I have good memories of the place - the beach, the grounds, the religious processions, all the nus rustling around! David Hyde, 1958-1962
I was at Holy Cross Convent from 1955 to 1958... I don't remember the names of the nuns, some were nice, others not so much..
