Next Best Thing To The Toy Shop!
A Memory of Buckhurst Hill.
The next best thing to the toy shop was Guyatts Pet shop, almost at the top of Queens Road on the right hand side of the street. On the right hand side of the shop was a pathway that lead to a back yard that may have been stables in an earlier era. Along that pathway adjacent to the side wall of the shop there was an array of cages that housed all manner of cuddly pets for sale - puppies, kittens and rabbits etc. As my twin sister and I were not allowed to have pets, whenever we were passing by, we always longed to spend some time there stroking the animals with our small fingers, which just fitted through the wire of the cages. But all too soon it was over and we would have to obey our mother and move on. There was always a pervasive smell of hay and grain, and other stock feed which I can still remember to this day which was rather nice.
