Beaumont Street is named after the family of Viscount Allendale; here stands the great Abbey Church of St Andrew that makes Hexham important. The first church at Hexham was founded by St Wilfred on land given to him in AD674 by Queen Ethelreda of Northumbria. The present Abbey dates from the 12th to the 15th centuries, though the crypt of St Wilfred's original church remains, as does his cut-out square stone seat (the Frith Stool). The east end of the Abbey was rebuilt in 1858, and the nave in the early 20th century.
