Share your own memories of Hemsby and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

As a Londoner, when my new husband was offered a job in Great Yarmouth in 1964, I was excited, although a bit apprehensive about moving to the small village of Hemsby. We bought a brand new house in a new subdivision at Two Meadows. It backed onto the railway line. I think it was later called Meadow Rise. I was 19. My first two children were born there with a midwife, Nurse Chase and Dr Timothy ? I remember St. Mary's ...see more
Are any of these cottages still there, I see from photo's some fell into the sea. Would love to relive childhood memories of staying in these as a child in the early 1960's
Many happy memories of staying in a few of the beach cottages in the dunes in the early 1960's , I have a picture of myself my mother and brother outside a little cottage called 'Shalimar' I must have been only 10 at the time. Holidays there were always happy times.
Having spent many happy holidays in Hemsby, my friend Avril and I decided to sign up for a season in Seacroft, we were just 18 and up for what was then an adventure away from home. It was a very happy time, we made many friends with both other waitresses and campers. I was sorry not to go back the following year, maybe life would have been very different but the memories of 1963 season linger on. I too remember the pub ...see more
I remember well my time at Hemsby.Paul Alden rented Cosy Car from his Aunt Margaret,This would be 1970.We also had our honeymoon there.the weather was lovely in September1970.When we had our daughter we all enjoyed our walks, and the beach.Aunt Lorna Engledow, and Paul's mum Joyce visited us,sadly they have both passed away.Strange to think we slept in the shed, times have changed.I think one of my husbands relations bought Cosy Car and still owns it.
We started holidaying in Hemsby in the late 1970s. My parents loved it as we'd always had caravan holidays previously but now we had a chalet!! They always stayed at Belle Aire site. Hemsby was pretty spartan in those days!! There was a golf area on the right of Beach road, just past Belle Aire, which was covered with rabbits in the evening!! The house next along there I believe was empty then but of ...see more
I have many happy memories of going on holiday to Hemsby in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I remember we used to stay on the sand dunes in a wooden chalet-type building with no running water and an outside toilet, how times have changed. The one I thing do remember is a cottage with illuminated ornaments in the garden, I think they were models of old barrel-top gipsy caravans, but I may be wrong. ...see more
In 1950 my family started staying at Hemsby for a holiday each year. Would you believe that in those days you couldnt even buy a bag of chips. There was a small amusement arcade in Beach Road and a few machines at the tea rooms on the beach. In fact the only take away food was from the cockle stall opposite the Lacons Arms. In those early days the highlight of the week was to go to the local police house(PC ...see more
I was most surprised to see my late grandfather William Mannall and possibly my uncle Paul with granddads donkeys ,which he had for many years on the beach at Hemsby and also later at Newport (uncle Paul). I had many gratis rides to encourage others and used to help with the tack and grooming. All in all I had many happy days at Hemsby with my Grandfather, my uncle Paul and of course the donkeys. I nearly For got ...see more
