About this photo

A legacy from Allendale's lead-mining and market town days was that it was well provided with hotels, like the ivy- clad Dale Hotel seen here, as well as a number of quality public houses. In 1998 Allendale had two entries in the Good Beer Guide: the Golden Lion, and the King's Head Hotel. Both serve guest beers, but it is to the Golden Lion that we go for Butterknowle Conciliation, and the to the King's Head for Jennings Cumberland.
