Bexleyheath Bus Garage

A Memory of Bexleyheath.

I lived opposite the bus garage for many years (from 1949), my mum worked in the newsagents in the parade of shops (next to the garage) then at Lewis sweet shop at the clock-tower.
My dad was a coach driver for Margo's, Bexleyheath, for as long as I can remember.
I had a Saturday job at Barret's the shoe shop in the Broadway, we would go to the Silver Lounge for lunch and walk back eating our ice cream which they used to dip in hot chocolate for us. I can taste it now.
Saturday night we would go to the Inferno at Welling or The Black Cat Club next to Woolwich Arsenal Station.
I have loads of wonderful memories of my childhood in Bexleyheath and I would not swap them for the world.

I have memories of going to the Inferno and the black cat too. Grew up in Bexleyheath from 1952 to 1971. I have very fond memories of Bexleyheath, I lived in Erith Road by Chieveley Road.
AH! Bexleyheath, what a great place it was to grow up in. I went to Graham Road School and remember day trips, and holidays with the school often transported by Margo's bus company. My first infants school was Pelham Road but I apparently screamed the place down so was moved to Upton Road School, which was nearer to home and I loved and finally on to newly built Gravel Hill School which was my favourite and even more closer to home.
At the age of 14 I went to the Inferno which backed on to my grandparents house in Olyffe Avenue and clearly remember how they cheered when it burnt down shortly after my one and only visit. A few of years later I went regularly to the Black Cat Club, loved the music and atmosphere. The Twisted Wheel in Welling and The Austral in Sidcup were also visited. My favourite music venue was however The Black Prince on the A2 and very close to home.
It was listening to music there that I made the transition from a very smart Mod to a rather shabby but happy Hippy --Rock On
