Chinese Jazz Club

A Memory of Brighton.

It was Uncle Bonnie's Chinese Jazz Club which ran all-night sessions on a Friday night, from 11pm to about 6am the next morning. All sorts of jazz was played, including trad jazz. There were singles and couples, I think drinks most of the night, and of course a smoky atmosphere from cigarettes.

Great music and atmosphere, you all went home for breakfast unless you found an open cafe - what time did Joe Lyons tea house open at the bottom of St James Street?

Who was Uncle Bonnie and what happened to him?

Comments & Feedback

Hi, Obviously the picture is of the entrance to the Brighton Aquarium with Marine Parade and the beach to the right and the A127 Coast Road toward Black Rock , Peacehaven and Newhaven on the left. Th picture seems to have been taken from the Royal Albion hotel. Was the club situated in the Aquarium itself? I came from Patcham and used to know a Dave Wright at The B & H School for Building & Engineering 1951 -1954 then in Hanover Terrace. Was that you?
