West Green Primary School

A Memory of Crawley.

The picture shows the Junior School assembly hall which also doubled for PE with neatly stowed ceiling ropes and wall ladders. The headmaster was Mr Dennis who I believe lived in nearby Smalls Mead. I remember Mrs Gowings and Miss Parr who taught three generations of my family.
The Infants school building adjoined the main school and the headmistress was Miss Howes. I only remember one teacher; Mrs Thomas. The Infants and Junior Schools each had a dedicated entrance and playground. Sadly, the large playing field where we all had so much fun on sunny days, was sold off for housing development.

I went to West Green School as did my brother John and sister Patricia. I was there 1951 to 1957 I think. I remember Mr. Dennis the headmaster. Also Mr. Shove and the excellent Mr. Aubrey. Also Miss Gowings. Just opposite the school if Meadowlands lived my childhood friend Michael Bell. We have lost touch so if anyone could tell me how to contact him I would be so pleased. His mother Kath Bell was a keen gardener and just before she died recently, her out-of-hand garden at number 47 was on google earth street view looking like a rain forest. I went on to Thomas Bennett school aged 11 on the day it opened. Our year was always the oldest year. At west Green I was the judge in a play about road safety and I still remember some of my lines. I remember Composer of the Week. Mr Dennis played classical music on vinal as we marched into assembly where he told us about the composer's life.
