Cuckfield Hospital Maternity, Bolney Ward

A Memory of Cuckfield.

In March 1976 I gave birth to my eldest son Richard. We were living in East Grinstead at the time. I met some lovely people during this time. One of the other mums I met there has to this day remained a friend. My memories of Cuckfield Hospital are of a lovely friendly village hospital not like the huge sterile hospital I gave birth to my other son. About 8 years ago I returned to Sussex and visited the hospital and to my suprise it still looked how I had remembered it but perhaps smaller! I couldnt believe it when I spotted one of the lovely nurses a small Eastern lady who actually remembeted me! What a lovely experience. My son who I had told of Cuckfield where he was born actually went and had a look himself. One doctor I do remember was an absolute gorgeous young doctor called Dr. skip all I can remember was that he hopefully wouldn't be in the labour room when my time came! What wonderful memories I have and so glad I went back before they demolished it for a new residential area. Since then I have lived in different places in the world but Cuckfield will always hold very happy memories.

I am writing a novel about a Thalidomide born in 1961. Are there any doctors/midwifes that can help with details of delivery in this era. Specifically I want to know what happened to the babies that were left on windowsills and in cold store to die? Were parents offered funerals? Were the bodies put in the incinerator? Thank you
I was born at Cuckfield Hospital in 1955. I returned in 1981 to work as a midwife on the maternity unit. My eldest son was born at Cuckfield in 1982.
Happy memories.
