Dartford Heath.

A Memory of Dartford.

Does anybody remember the Glory Bumps on the Heath? For those who don't they were a series of parallel trenches which had presumably been dug by Archeologists in the past. We as kids used to ride our bikes over the humps which remained, often resulting in 'head-on' collisions. I had been to the Heath on the day that sweet rationing ended and stopped at a shop in Wilmington and bought a packet of 'Polos' whithout having to bother with coupons.

The Glory Bumps were, I think, constructed by the army when there was a large AA battery stationed on the Heath. Some used to think that they were for motor cycle dispatch rider training. I and my latest certainly had hours of fun on our bikes when we were kids.
I remember watching dispachriders train on motorcycles over the bumps. We took our oldbikes over them in late 1940 early 50

I remember even in the late 70's and early 80's biking the glory bumps. So much fun, Kids are probably still doing it. I think my first broken bone happened on the Heath!
Does anyone remember the shop on the Heath.? It was run by an elderly lady with a little dog who bit me on the face.

Yes, I remember the pond at the start of The Bumps. Now 64, I left Dartford in 1987 but quite often return. The pond was still there last year (2020). We always called it "The Donkey Pond". According to my old dad (who lived in Dartford all of his life until he died in 2001) it was so named because at one time gypsies would camp upon the heath and tether their donkeys at this spot so that they could drink and graze in an otherwise dry, well-drained area. I do also remember the pond being full of newts. Even last year it was full of frog tadpoles!
