Nostalgic memories of Dartford's local history

Share your own memories of Dartford and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Please can someone remind me of the name of the Fishing Tackle Shop in Low field Street, Dartford, where I used to join/rejoin DDA&PS each year?
From 1947 I lived in Bedford Road at the top of East Hill but my maternal grandparents lived in the prefabs at the other end of town. The name Blackmans Close sticks in my mind for some reason but I’m not sure if it’s my memory playing tricks - at the age of 75 that seems to happen at times lol. Does anyone remember if there were prefabs in Blackmans Close &, if so, whether that address still exists - I assume the ...see more
During the doodlebug attacks on Dover, my mum was an air raid warden. She had a friend with her and they saw the doodlebug engine cut out and dive to earth. It landed near Pauls Place but did not explode. We went to watch it and cordon the area off. The Royal Engineers came and made it safe. My mum asked the engineers if she could do anything to help - one of the men, a sergeant, said "make us a cup of tea", ...see more
I just browsed a few relatively recent pics of Ripley's Market in Lowfield St. So sad to see it derelict like that when all I have is happy memories. I knew the Ripley family well, they lived in Horns Cross and I went to school with Peter right from primary. The family were in the fruit and veg trade for generations and the little arcade type market was always buzzing. The last time I saw it was about 1999 when I ...see more

I went to Dartford recently, after many years, came out of the station and didn’t recognise a thing, came down a set of stairs, straight onto a dual carriageway ….. I’m sure ...see more

As far as I can see, no-one has left a memory of my old primary school. So, let me start this off (if I may?): Living in nearby North Road, I attended this school from 1962-68. When I started at the Infants' School, my reception teacher was a Mrs. Ransom. Later infants' teachers were Mrs. Field and Miss Sutton. When I progressed to the Junior School,my first teacher was a lovely, newly-qualified ...see more
Hello, I wonder if anyone remembers Patrick David Mackay, born in 1952, a young boy who attended St Albans Road School and York Road School in the end of the 50's and early 60s. After some years, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering 3-11 people. Any contribution would be appreciated from someone who has had experience meeting him at his younger life. Thank you.
