My Dads Childhood Memories

A Memory of Davenham.

I grew up in Davenham and so did my dad, Terence Littlemore. He's now in his late eighties and loves telling us stories about when he was a small boy and how hard life was then...but very enjoyable. Before he went to school (in Davenham) he would deliver milk for Horace Foden on his milk cart which was pulled by a carthorse. After deliveries he would take the horse back and feed it, then go on to school, after school he would do the same, he did this for 7 days of the week. People would have 2 milk deliveries, morning and afternoon, because with no fridges milk would go sour fast. My brothers (Terry and Kevin) and myself all went to Davenham school. I remember Paul's Dad, Mr Dean. I was a good girl, but I remember the boys often got the cane, in those days, just for looking in the wrong direction....it was NEVER their fault! Mrs Cook was a teacher and she also taught my dad. I worked in the village after leaving school for 5 years in the Beauty Spot hairdressers. Dad still lives in Davenham. I don't think he could live anywhere else. I was also married at Davenham Church, it's a beautiful church.

I too grew up in Davenham and also have many happy memories of life back in the 1940 s. We lived in Green Avenue and I remember my dad telling me that he paid £590 for our semi detatched no.37. These days that house is probably worth nearer to £230,000 ! I went to Davenham School too in1945 and remember Mr Dean the head who was very strict. I remember Miss Rose who taught the infants and I remember my first day when we were given plasticine and a small black slate and white chalk to draw with. Miss Swindles was also an infant teacher there. Mrs Hoole too I remember; her husband Jimmy played the church organ. On many occasions the church Rector would come into school and ,being a Cof E school we all learned the Ten Commandments, Nunc Dimitis, Lords Prayer and several other church service passages and prayers. My parents encouraged me at school also to go to church services-- Morning Service Sunday School and Evensong esp as I grew older. I can remember learning to dance the Maypole on Carnival Day which was an annual event held on the playing field accross from the school. We ran sports races there on that day and my pal Jean Anderson and me took part in the 3 legged race...where you stand side by side and tie both your inner legs together making seemingly one leg and then on the whistle you run like the wind in perfect rythm to the finish. We were ace at that and I don't think we were ever beaten. My other friends at school to name a few were Renee Capper Judith Wych Susan and Elizabeth Hughes from Green Avenue Margaret Hopwood Susan Darlington and Hilary Miller. Hilary had a beautiful coach built rocking doll s pram-- it was gorgeous--- and I loved playing with her so that I could have a go with it! Up until and into the 1950 s toys were very scarce after the war ended as it took the country a long time to get back on it s feet. I had 1 doll with a China face and sleeping eyes! She was lovely till her eyes fell out into the back of her head.i remember crying so much that my mum and I went on the old steam train to Chester and we found the Toys Hospital where my doll was repaired. Oh my goodness ,the memories come flooding back. Such happy times and I could go on and on and on. I am 77 now ... And I would love to hear from anyone else who grew up in Davenham and is perhaps around my age. Here s hoping!! My email address hjm22@talktalk.net. My name was Jean Hickson
