Westmeston Maternity Home Green Hedges

A Memory of Ditchling.

I was born at Westmeston Maternity Home in 1943. My name was Jennifer Mary Pierce and my mother was Edna Mary Peirce, a nurse there. She gave me up for adoption in 1943. Does anyone know of her, or anything about Green Hedge? My name now is Bridget Turner.

Hallo Bridget, Green Hedges Maternity Home was in Westmeston. It was rented during the war by Alistair Elliott and Margaret Munro. They came from Battersea and had a maternity home there. They took in mothers who had to give their babies up for adoption. After the war the owners then bought Broadhill, Keymer Road, Burgess Hill, which now comes under Hassocks! This they turned into another maternity home for private and unmarried mothers to have their babies. See article due online soon under Broadhill. I believe both homes had the same matron who may have been a relative of the owner. She was Edith Elliott.

thank you for that information, i have now found out about my birth mother, but no ideas who my birth father was, [ presume Edith Elliot will have passed on by now. I wonder if there. are any records still in existance.
Hello Jane
Just seen your email ref the Nursing Home. Green Hedges, Westmeston. I was born in the home Sept 1942 and my brother Nov 1945. I don't know anything about the home other than what you have said. I imagined my mum Florence Rye had us there because of the bombing in London. My mum was married to John and stayed married til he died in the 1980's. I wonder if there was a connection between my dad and the owners as my dad came from Chelsea!
I was born in Green Hedges in 1945. I was the third child in the family to be followed by a sister in 1947, but I don't think she was born there. Drive past quite often, but I believe in the last few years it has been renamed
My brother ,Richard Rogers was born at Green Hedges,Broad Hill Keymer, this is the address on his birth cert.,dated 12.10.1948. It is the same address for his death cert. dated 14.10.1948.
The Matron at the time told my parents she "would deal with everything".There is no record anywhere of a Burial ,I have been in touch with Sussex Family History and they have said he would probably have been put into the coffin of the next adult burial at the Undertakers.Has any one any idea who that undertaker might have been, the nearest to that address,Many thanks for ANY help.
