Some Of Enfield's Rich History.

A Memory of Enfield.

St. Andrew's Church behind the market place was a church where Princess Elizabeth, who became Queen Elizabeth the 1st often prayed. She sometimes lived at the old palace that became Pearsons and I was told that there at one time existed a tunnel between the Palace and the St. Andrew's Church.

It is reputed that Maiden's Bridge was the place where Sir Walter Raleigh laid down his cloak so the good Queen Bess would not soil her shoes in the mud.

The Rose and Crown in Clay Hill with its notorious connection to Dick Turpin and Black Bess, his horse.

Whitewebbs House where Guido Fawkes and his cohorts plotted the Gunpowder Plot.

Enfield, my Enfield. Such wonderful memories.

There was indeed a tunnel from the old palace. I worked in Pearsons in the 1960's and the tunnel started in the basement under the knitting wools department, which was used for storage although it was by then blocked up mostly and did run to St Andrews church
Sorry did NOT run to St Andrews!
