I am interested to know the actual history of the sweet shop called "The Mons". How old was it ? Why such an unusual name ? Was it named after the battle of The Mons, in the first world war ? or named because of someone from Frimley Green who fought in the battle ? and now is sadly being demolished. Can anyone give any info please ?
My mother, aged 84, lived in Frimley Green 1942 - 1948. Trevor Clapshaw, the son of the couple who ran (?owned) the Mons sweet shop was for a while a boyfriend of hers. She says it was probably assumed by everyone that Mr Clapshaw had served in WW1 and Mons was significant to him.
i shall need to check with the frimley green library as for history of frimley green.
In the 1950s I remember visiting my grandad, Ted Gannon, when he was working in a sweet shop or newsagents. I seem to remember that the lady who served there was called Mrs Burdett. Is this the same shop? Does anyone else remember her?
