Picnics And Butterflies

A Memory of Gillingham.

Our parents used to take us for picnics on the Banks. In those days we had nets and used to be allowed to catch the butterflies and identify them. My father taught us the names of the wild flowers, there used to be wild orchids on the Banks then. The woods surrounding the banks were carpeted with blue-bells, so vivid in my memory to this day. Chestnuts were abundant in the autumn and we used to collect large bags full to the brim and roast them on a shovel in the fire. When you stood on the Banks and called" Hello" there used to be an echo ,so we ALWAYS called as soon as we arrived. I remember rolling from the top as far as we could and just trudging back up again.

"? When I worked in the council offices I sometimes used to walk there in my lunch hour. Wonder if they are still there or if they have been built on now
