Where Did All Our Childhoods Go?
A Memory of Goldthorpe.
Looking at the comments and photographs of South Yorkshire and its then thriving industries, remembering the comradeship and dare I say "culture" of its people based on their community spirit and the so frequently mentioned facilities of the Miners' Welfare makes me, now at the age of 76, feel so, so, angry, especially when I hear politicians talking about being "all in it together" or needing to be "one Nation". I have vivid memories of the communities of Sprotbrough, Woodlands, Goldthorpe, Bolton on Dearne, South Elmsall, Wheatley and Wheatley Hills and Hexthorpe both during the latter part of WW11 and afterwards and we didn't need to be told what made a community or how we should behave towards one another. What we do know, is who destroyed it all.
