More about this scene

Hayle had no pretensions as a place of beauty. It was described as having 'mean cottages, a few poor shops, an inn and a shabby railway viaduct ... and over all whitewash and coaldust struggling for mastery'. Yet it was a prosperous port and boasted thriving iron foundries and an early copper-smelting house.

My great grandad was a skilled coppersmith and upon moving up into England made copper parts for boat engines and fixed ships out at sea when they were in trouble.
