Nostalgic memories of Hexham's local history

Share your own memories of Hexham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I am wondering if anyone has any information on the Red Cross hospital that cared for convalescents in Hexham around 1957-1960. I am particularly interested in anyone who helped the priests and fathers there. Or anyone who knows anything about them. My father helped out there when he was a child, about 9/10yrs old, and the stories are shocking. I have information on all ...see more

It was 1941 or 42 - I was 6 or 7 then. I was a quiet kid, shy, only child. We lived in Walker, close to the Navel Yard. My dad was RAF in North Africa and Mom worked in the shipyard. So I was evacuated. After a couple of aunt's homes, I was sent to Hexham. Right off I was bullied, other boys thought I was older because I was very tall for my age. One day some of the boys tied me to a tree at ...see more
My half-brother, Ian, was sent to a hospital after his accident. He was paralyzed from the neck down. He was only about 15 when this horrid accident occurred. It was Hexham spinal unit. Was it this hospital does anyone out there know - could you kindly reply back to me. I would like to know if any one worked there at the time. It was many years ago and appreciate that there were many people that came and went to Hexham spinal ...see more
I attended this camp about 6 times when I was at St John Fisher School, Gateshead in the early 60's. A school from Middlesboro would also have been at the camp. I have only fond memories of this place; £1 for 2 weeks all in, plus 2 week's off school, it was a no brainer. We went out on trips to the Kielder Forest, walked along the Roman wall, visited Blanchland Abbey, a tour of Hexham Abbey and we visited ...see more
I am now 83. When I was 11 I was a pupil at Dukes house. I visited there yesterday and remembered the happy times; I remember Mr Scott, the Headmaster, a well liked man by all of us. I tried to get down to Swallowship but having almost got there we gave up having been advised by a very nice young lady walking her dogs that it was a difficult walk due to all the recent rains. I remember also the time when we ...see more
I was interested to read the memories of those who attended this school during the war years because the headmaster, whose name was mentioned, was my father, Bill Scott. At that time, the school was operated by Newcastle upon Tyne Education Committee. My father, arrived there with the first evacuated children in May 1940, and he remained in charge until the end of 1944, when it was closed down for an ...see more
