Many Happy Times

A Memory of Hornsey.

I came into this world in 1952 at the Alexandra Nursing Home in Muswell Hill. I lived in St Mary's Road off the High Street until 1960 when we moved to Hawthorn Road where I lived until 1974. My dad (Pete McCafferty) used to drink in The Hornsey Tavern. Mum (Vi) worked at The Hornsey Journal until I was born. I went to Rokesly Infants and Junior Schools and then to Clemence Cave. I remember playing in the street, on bomb sites and in Priory Park. I spent a lot of time at the open air swimming pool in Park Road during the summer holidays. I remember the 217 buses the smell of David Griegs in the High Street- all ham and cheese! And Jones the fish shop, Comans the sweet shop by the bus stop, Caldows the hardware shop, Ellis's who sold furniture and cars.......I could go on!!! Does anyone remember a large house in Tottenham Lane next to the Salvation Army building? I seem to remember it was white and had large clam shells on either side of its front door that had plants in them. We had relatives living in Northview Road, Campsbourne Road and The Grove in Crouch End so were able to walk to see them. No car in those days. I have lots of happy memories of my childhood in Hornsey. It was a lovely place.

I lived in Nightingale Lane from 1948 to 1966, attended Campsbourne and Clemence Cave schools. Memories flood back of Priory Park, Park Road Lido, Ally Pally, David Greig and Ellis Furniture on the High Street and so many other local places. I now live in glorious mid Wales, but my childhood memories of Hornsey are magical
I remember your nan, we lived next door to her in Northview Road, her name was Kate she had a very strong northern accent. She had a daughter Kath and two granddaughters Caroline and Catherine. I remember your Dad too his name was Peter. I lived next door to Kate all my life until I got married in 1970. I went to Campsbourne School from nursery through to Clemence Cave. My best friend was Sue Anderson, she lived in Northview Road, at the top near the dairy. My Dad drank in the Nightingale pub which I believe is no longer there. Haven't been back to Hornsey for many years, but intend to take a trip there very soon.
I can't believe I got a message from you, I haven't visited this website in ages, but did earlier on today - and then got an email to say someone had posted a comment ! How weird !!
Yes nan was from Hebburn in Newcastle, and never lost her accent. A real character. Sadly none of them are around now, ( nan died in 1987, I lost my dad in 2007 and Kath followed the following year, but I'm still in touch with Catherine and Caroline and we all had a nostalgic day last July visiting the area. Catherine lives in Norfolk and has 4 grandsons Caroline lives in Hertford. So were you in the flat upstairs from nan ? What's your name? I must tell the girls. The Nightingale is being converted into luxury flats ! Thanks for your comments - always good to hear from a fellow Hornsey- ite ! Take care
So pleased you decided to look on this site again and for your reply. Yes I did live in the flat upstairs 58a, my name was Betty Smith. I got married in 1970 and moved to Waltham Abbey, we now live in Hoddesdon, have lived there for over 40 years. My Dad died in 1970 my Mum a few years later. Please give my best wishes to Catherine and Caroline, I remember when we all used to play out in the street.
