St Mary's School

A Memory of Hornsey.

I lived in Hornsey up until 1960, I attended St Mary's School, Priory Rd (Hornsey High street?) I finished with school there in 1950 and was there four or five years? I think the headmaster was Mr Ball(?) There was a music teacher Miss Thrower(?) I would be interested being in touch with anyone who attended there at that time or in the areas mentioned below. I lived on Rathcool Gdns in those years. The Vale, now obliterated from physical memory, had a collection of small stores; newsagents, butchers, bake shop, greengrocers, shoe repair and other assorted shops. The Abby pub and a small factory that made car batteries. It was the local shopping area other than in Tottenham Lane or down in the Broadway! Nothing stays the same but it would be nice to hear from someone who knew and remembers that time and area. It may be a bit late in the day for this, but you never know?

Hi Ken, I was born in December 1942, and lived in Oakley Gardens. Our garden backed on to the battery factory, and we often couldn't go out because of the acid fumes! I went to St Mary's infants in Harold Road, and then St Mary's Junior on the High Street. I finished up at North Harringay Seniors. I had an aunt and cousins living in Rathcoole Avenue, and my best friend at the time was Derek Compton who lived in Rathcoole Gardens. Do you remember Polly's shop next to the battery factory entrance? I remember the time with great affection, although I moved away when I was 16. Mike Birbeck
Hi Mike, I attended Rokesly school and then St Mary's in the High street, both now gone from existence. Florie Pollard's I remember and if she were closed you could still buy things after hours! I regret not having taken pics of that whole area when I was back for a visit in 1965, not knowing at the time it was set for demolition. Now it is but a memory. The Compton's lived just up on the other side of the road from me. Their were
four kids:From the oldest Beryl(?) Brian,Derek,Alan. I chummed
around with Brian at one time. Have been able to make contact
with any of them over the years? I believe they moved away to Enfield not long after I left in 1960 for Canada and have been here ever since. The best move I ever made. though I still have some fond memories of growing up around there, even with the bombing and 'Doodle Bugs' They say you should never revisit old haunts etc. and there's some truth to that for it can taint the memories you have. London has changed and the demographics are evident but parts of London still have charm and historical significance. Id be interested to hear of other memories you may have and it will jog my memory too! Thanks for replying.

Hi Ken. I have stumbled across this site whilst researching my family tree.My mum and her brothers and sister lived in Rathcoole Gardens. My Uncle Ted Wood remembers you very well and also the Compton family. He has been telling me lots of stories from those days. He doesn't have access to the Internet so I am posting this comment on his behalf in the hope that you are still watching this site. He tells me that he has addresses of some of those mentioned. His brother, Ray Wood is the singer in the skiffle band mentioned elsewhere. My mum's name is Pat. Regards Hazel
Hi Hazel, Not sure what's going on in this site and whether my replies are actually reaching you? If you could make a short reply ASAP I'd appreciate it. Thanks. Ken.
Hi Hazel. Is there a problem why you haven't replied to me? I'm rather disappointed. Ken
