Dating from the 1500s (and possibly earlier), the half- timbered building on the left fronting both the High Street and Hickmans Lane has had a chequered history. It was used as commercial offices before Miss Maud Savill, daughter of the local shipping magnate Walter Savill, paid for its restoration; it then became one of the most photographed houses in the High Street. The Savill family home was Finches, a sprawling house situated along Hickmans Lane, with grounds that were tended by twelve full-time gardeners. At the time when this photograph was taken, the house was a country hotel; this was later to be demolished and the land used for a housing estate. The building on the opposite corner is currently an antiques shop, one of a number in the High Street.
