Memories Of Vincent Secondary Modern 1960 1965

A Memory of Northolt.

I have just stumbled across this web site.

My name is John Bryon and I remember Mr Mills the PE teacher. He liked to take the climbing ropes in the gym, and, if you didn't climb very well or fast enough he would slap you on the bottom with the rope! I was good at track and field as I was very tall for my age, but not good at team sports. I could tell he never liked me. Every time I wanted to jump for the school record he would always say "No, not enough time!" I lived at 94 Eskdale Avenue until 1966 and the moved to Shepperton Middlesex.

I left school in 1965. I had a rock band and played songs by the Shadows and Roy Orbison at two school dances. The band was called Steve and the Blue Diamonds (it was the 1960's!) I would love to hear from anyone that knows what happened or remembers the band. I played lead guitar (badly) and the band was fronted by a Stephen Cooper who sung. I have never figured out how to contact anyone but I have only just found this website.

I now live in the United States in Seattle and have done so since 1980

Memories of St Vincent all good, especially of Mr Mills and the climbing ropes, and the Head master's Triumph Herald
You must have been good a rope climbing, but I agree with you about the Triumph Herald.
When were you there?
Just found this website while I was looking up the history of Northolt

I was there from about 1960 to about 66-67
I can remember several people that were in my class, just wonder if you remember any of theses names
Linda Blackshire, Paul Brennan, Ron Bishop, Ian Coleman, Michael Beasley, Terry ?, Vivian and Linda (twins, can't remember their last names)Frank Hobson, Terry Barker, Terry Scot (its not many, its a long time ago
The teachers I remember were Mr Mills, Mr Miller (head master)Mr Watters, Mr Randolph, Mr Fox, Miss Tombs
I used to live in the house next door to the gym and girls play ground
Anyone here remember me ?
I think a lot of the kids I went to school with have pegged out now, been to where they used to live, all moved away
Hi - I attended Vincent School until 1965 and remember Mr Fox, Mr Mills (always nice to girls but tougher on boys); Miss Toombs (maths teacher and always horrible to me when aged 11 putting complicated sums on board and then calling me out to solve them - never could so gave her an opportunity to hit me); Miss Xavier (4th year lovely maths teacher); Mr Webster, History (never taught, just chatted for a while and then gave us a chapter to read while he sat behind his newspaper from which a wreath of cigarette smoke would slowly rise); Mr Miller (nice head) and Miss Watters (more strict deputy head); Mr Randolph (nice) and Mr Maloney (horrible - wouldn't have girls in his class - try that today!!); Mr Wingate (English teacher) and many more. Strange how teachers stay in the memory.
My sister, Yvonne, was in the year above and my sister, Janis, in the year below.
Lynda Hughes
Hi Lynda
You have a really good memory. Hearing those names again brought back lots of memories. I remember you. I think we were in the same class. I was very tall for my age. I never did well in mr fox's class but I ended up as a project director for a mechanical construction company in Seattle working with numbers and project costing. Ha. Ironical really.
Thanks for posting

Hi John - am pretty sure I remember you too. Tall, a little serious and hardworking, nice boy. Good attributes, eh and confirmed by your great career. My best subject at school was English with Mr Wingate (known as Windbag!), I did poorly at Maths, though, and was only entered for RSA which I did pass okay (was only arithmetic).
I took my Maths GCE in my 30s and got a B spurred on as I needed it (plus A levels) to enter University of Southampton to take a degree in Psychology. Got an upper 2:1 so not doing so well at school is not a position set in stone.
Best wishes, Lynda
Gosh just stumbled across this. My sisters and I attended the school. Remember Bob Brennan who was in the class above me. He is now a relative through marriage. His sister, Linda passed away recently. My elder sister Patricia Whitehurst passed away while living in germany. I am Raymond Whitehurst. drove tube trains for many years. Became a hero of the 7/7 tube bombings when they blew up the train I was driving at Edgware Road. That forced me into early retirement with a medal. been the subject of a few books on the subject, but they always call me Ray?
