Ye Original Pharmacy

A Memory of Oadby.

My dad was Eddie Cattell who ran Ye Original Pharmacy at 104 Leicester Road opposite Sandhurst Street School.
We lived at the shop before moving to 41 Fairstone Hill when the houses there were built.
I went to Sandhurst Street, then Langmoor, then Gartree and finally Beauchamp and run a reunion for anyone who went to those schools in the late 50s, and the 60s twice a year. Contact me if you are interested.
I also remember Allens the other chemist, and the swimming pool with the library over before it moved the Manor House and finally at the end of Sandhurst Street. I also remember the market gardens that used to occupy that site before the car park. I also remember the farm which is now the shops on Chestnut Avenue and the ruins of the Frith, the gardens of which became the Spinny which was partially demolished when the A6 was dualled down Oadby Hill and then destroyed by Woolcos being built.
And who remembers the Chestnut Tree, right next to our house?
I left Oadby in 1971 when I joined the RAF but still visit occasionally as my mum lives in Wigston Fields and the reunions are held at the Yews at Glen.
