St. John Ambulance Association

A Memory of Sutton In Ashfield.

Sutton in Ashfield History

I am writing a book that follows the First World War experiences of my Great Grandfather, Albert Edward Wingrove. He used to have a Off Licence premises at 58 Outram Street in Sutton in Ashfield, pictured below with the name above the door.

A Division of the St. John Ambulance Association was formed in 1901 in Sutton in Ashfield and 18 of them joined the Royal Navy Auxiliary Sick Berth Reserve and served on Royal Navy Hospital ships.

Prior to their leaving at the outbreak of the war there were a number of photographs taken of them. I have two examples that were taken from microfilm copies of the Notts Free Press.

I am seeking your help to track down original copies of these photos or descendants of the 18 men who along with my grandfather appear in them. They may have had copies of the original photos that have been passed down through the generations to decedents who are still living in Sutton in Ashfield. The decedents of these men who served in the First World War may be part of your organisation.

Some of the names are as follows.

• Frow
• Wood
• Slack
• Fawkes
• Rawlins
• Peat
• Turner
• Fleet
• Harvey
• Walker
• Cooke
• Betts
• Bigwood
• Harper
• Wingrove
• Nesbitt

Could I ask that you share this email with others from Sutton in Ashfield to see if they have any connection to this story?

Kind regards

Andrew Wingrove
