Army Barracks Overlooking Vivary Park

A Memory of Taunton.

I lived in the Army Barracks [Jelelahbad] from around 1960-61 and went to Mary Magdalene School which is now closed and used as an auctions room. One teacher I recall was a Mr Oak and pupils were Margaret Harvey, John & Jane Scott, Paul Hacker, and Marilyne Littlejohn. We spent a lot of time playing in Vivary Park and bought our sweets from Jarvis Sweet shop across the road from the iron gates last I heard it was turned into a Tatoo Shop in the 1980/90s. Tutor Tavern back then was run by Mr & Mrs Hacker who had sons called Paul and Clifford we often played in the tavern in the cellar area it was very spooky. My father was stationed at nearby Norton Manor Camp and mother worked at Woolworths.

The school was actually Central Primary School. I had a friend who lived at the barracks and we'd spend saturday mornings in the military museum and afterwards we'd grab handfuls of empty shells from boxes in the barracks. I remember the Scotts and Mr Oak who left and moved to Ottery St Mary. Headmistress was Miss MacDonald and I was ink monitor.

Anybody remember Jane Brigden? Anybody remember the name of the joke shop in Station Road?
I also went to Central Primary School but from 1955 to 1957 when Mrs Bailey was the Head...I was one of only two pupils who passed their 11 plus in 1957 and went on to Bishop Fox's
I attended Central Primary from 1963 to 67. I recall Mr Oak and several other teachers too. cjbhrr59 we must have crossed paths?
