Helen Bates Growing Up

A Memory of Tottenham.

I was born in 1957 in Victoria Crescent, just off St Anns Road. I also remember the sweet shop that made their own sweets. My brother, sister & I used to stand outside watching the man stretch large pieces of toffee and mint on a marble slab. I went to Seven Sisters Infant and Junior School. I remember the corner sweet shop by the school where we used to buy frozen Jublee's. My brother and I used to stand outside the Victoria pub on the corner of our street on Guy Fawkes night with our home made guy, "penny for the guy?" I remember too, the rec where you could rent a bike and peddle round the made up streets with the traffic lights and zebra crossings. I remember Chestnuts park on St Anns Road, opposite The Nunnery and Tottenham police station. Where we lived you could hear the speedway from Harringay greyhound track on a Saturday. When I was older I would get the 127 bus to the Tottenham Royal, happy days! Also up 'the town', Seven Sisters Road, was the pie and mash shop - we would go there on a Saturday. I remember Saturday tea time a man would come round in a disabled three-wheeler car shouting "paper, evening paper". My dad would give me 5 pence (old money), to go and get an evening standard for the football results. We all supported Spurs and sometime dad would take us to White Hart Lane to watch the football. Lovely memories, but sadly it's all changed now.

Helen, thanks for the memories. You are Kathrines little sister and your brother was either David like he was to me or Albert to some others. I remember you all very well as I lived opposite for a number of years. Your dad would take some of us to the Stock Car Racing or Greyhounds at Harringay Arena and generally treat us to a hot-dog. Great memories.
Best Wishes,
Billy Clark
Hi Billy,
Yes, I'm David's and Kathys little sister. How lovely to hear from you. I remember you really well. Was your brothers called Alan and Colin? It's a long time isn't it since we were all living in Victoria Crescent. Where are you now? I'm Living in North Cambridgeshire. But when we left Tottenham we moved to Hertfordshire. My mum still lives there. Infact so does David and Kathy. What about your brothers? It's so good to hear from you. I've loads of memories of when we were younger. Are you on Face book? If you are I could message you properly.
Regards
Helen
Hi Helen, yes I am on Facebook and you can find me under my normal name and profile picture is me as a little boy.
I currently live in Harlow but will be moving sometime in May.
If you can get in touch I would be interested to see how you have all got on since those Victoria Cres days. I will also be able to let you know about my journey in life since those days.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Billy
