i started as a cook then as plumpers mate in the late 60s ive been up the tower witch was the holding the water tanks.the padded cells were in the basment at the front of the building,they still had some of the padding.at the time my mum worked in the laundry down the hill.there is a tunnel witch runs from the sanatorum to the laundry at the bottom of the hill.my family lived in verginia water for some time by the name of jonson and my dad everest lived in hurst lane
Was the Holloway Sanatorium once known as Zachary Murton Home, or was this another establishment?
I moved to Sandy Lane, opposite Lindsey Smith nurses' accommodation in Virginia Water. There were twelve of us auxillaries from Scotland as far as Kent. We all used to go out to the local pub by the station, The Trotsworth, and ask for a glass of water if we were feeling the pinch. We had a minibus that took us to work at St. Peter's Hospital. On August 13, 1961 I took up residence as a student nurse in Lindsay Smith House across from the hospital. It was the day the Berlin wall went up, and, as I recall, the day before the grouse shooting season began. I was 19 years old. Miss Goodyear was the Matron.
