Born In Watford

A Memory of Watford.

my memories of Watford start in 1947 when I was born in the front bedroom of our house in Liverpool Road from the 1950s till approx 1968 there is not much I didn't know about the town I first went to school at Watford fields changing to Victoria boys school. We did our train spotting at Watford Heath where the train had to slow down to take on water from the chutes that ran between the lines. the cattle market was up the side of the post office in market street and on the other side of market street just down a bit was the slaughter house I remember going there with friends and watched as they killed a cow I didn't like it one little bit. on the corner of market street was the Rose and Crown they still covered the floor with saw dust in those days oppersite was the entrance  to the Arcade which led you into the market where my mother had a stall right at the rear was the cafe but in the end aisle was a tea stall which did wonderful bacon rolls , then there was Charlie where all the local youths brought their Levi's.at this particular time Watford was a print town there was the Sun and Odhams and in the small alley ways of the high street were all the small printers and if you could get a job at the Sun or Odhams ou would be on good money as they paid very well. At that time it was a great place to live we had two good parks to play in the big one at the top of the high street which was Cassiobury park  I used to go to the other one cassio which the river Colne ran through then later on it was Water Lane about three times a week we had to go to the Annex to school and we would walk along side a stream through a field and under the five arches some times we would go from the park in water lane and cross the viaduct which when you look back was a bit stupid as it was very dangerous, mind you we ran like the wind to get across . I could go on and on about stories from my youth in Watford the tram lines were still down in market street and one of the best times was the Saturday morning pictures at the Gaumont the Essoldo was still called he Regal.
    them were the days
