The Floods In Molesey

A Memory of West Molesey.

I remember the river mole had broke it banks and a lot of molesey had been flooded . We went with my dad to see how bad it was . We lived in molesham way and it hadn't reached us then. We went to bed that evening ,and remember waking up to water in my bedroom. We lived in the flats so had to try and get all our furniture upstairs. We stayed upstairs with neighbours . Also remember the army bringing us bits of food. We had a great time no school .Also got coverage by local Tv station . We had such good friends and neighbours and we all helped each other.Although we all lost a lot of our belonging and furniture ,community spirit helped us get through it.

Remember the molesey floods well . We lived in Spencer road at the time.i was 16 and remember rowing around our wreaked garden on a makeshift raft, and being fascinated by one single perfect pink rose bloom poking out from Just above the flood waters.Beautiful amongst all that devastation!!

Was that 1967? I had moved away but my mother was living by herself in Rosemary Avenue and the flood came up to her downstairs windowsills. A couple who had a bungalow along the road had the water almost up to their ceiling so they moved in with my mother and carried some of her furniture upstairs for her. Concerned relatives tried phoning her, but although they got the ringing tone her phone didn't ring. Strangely, the elecricity stayed on in spite of being under water. I have a photo she took - a van in the driveway next door is submerged above the bonnet. Rosemary Avenue was flooded for a long time. Eventually they had two large diesel pumps running for more than two weeks, pumping the water through pipes across Hurst Road and down Cherry Orchard Road into the Thames.
