Napier Terrace

Hello Folks I was born in Chase St right opposite the Gas Holder in 1935. I went to St Austines Primary then St Peters Junior and on to Queens school. I had a very happy childhood brought up by to loving parents who ran a shop in chase st, people moan on about austerity now but it was the norm then. People worked on the land picking crops in the season but in the winter they went short. Ican remember my Dad running a "tick" book for lots of his poorer customers just for the bare essential when there wasn't much work and then when times got better they would pay what they owed. It was war years when food was rationed, 2oz marg, 2oz lard I remember because us kids use to do a lot of the weighing and getting peoples orders ready. younger people think that having food orders delivered is a new thing but my dad delivered orders in 1940. Iwas a keen swimmer and spent a lot of my time at the old swimming pool down by the swinging bearth. Iwas a member of the swimming club for many years and played water polo with the Bunning brothers and Bill Bodger, Colin Mathews, and many others. I have searched most of the photo archives for pictures of Chase St but so far I havn't been lucky so if there is anyone in Wisbech that has old pictues I would love to be able to buy copies.
