More about this scene

Although a seemingly idyllic view of the canal, what this picture cannot show is the stagnant state of the water, caused by silting and the rubbish thrown in by householders and businesses along the waterway. Lurking behind the Hope Inn is the gasholder that was for many years a dominant landmark in the town. The houses were swept away during the series of 'slum' clearances that began in the 1930s.

Memory Of A 12 Year Old
I remember this scene well, the pub in the picture is The Hope Inn. At the time my mother and father kept a pub further up the canal towards the River Nene, this pub was called The Castle Inn. At the time this photograph was taken there were 4 pubs in this vicinity, across the road from The Hope Inn was The Case Is Altered. A present day pub called The Case is almost on the footprint of its namesake. ...see more

However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
