Share your own memories of Stubbington and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

I landed up in Stubbington after Boxgrove School in Guildford closed ( truly Dickensian!) I was terrified of Arthur Moore, he was just awful, I never had a clue about latin and he really enjoyed the fact that I was a waste of time in that department, chalk spit and dandruff flying in all directions. I went to a reunion at the RAC club in London about 10 years ago with a long time friend Robert Dalgliesh, the ...see more
I arrived at the school in 1971 I was 9 years old such a long time ago I read through other people views and remember Mr Moore in the way he has been described and also Mr renton who was a very nice fellow along with the other staff mentioned being jewish at the time there were only 2 jews at the school, they made allowances for this as we did not have to attend chapel, but there was no ...see more
Hi this is a long shot but I was at Earleywood School before it became Stubbington House . I was there reasonably briefly from 1959 to 1961 . Would love to get feed back from anyone who was there or maybe any of the teachers. I remember the kind Matron Matty, she even sent me food parcels when I moved school! Hope someone can be of assistance. Regards David Green
Hi Chris, How wonderful to hear from you after all these years, I had a lot of happy memories of Stubbington, but not so much of Hurn Court which I couldn't leave fast enough, there was a lot of bullying at that school, but it was a magnificent building nevertheless. I went to work in Hardy Bros in Pall Mall which sold extremely expensive fishing tackle to the great and the good, and then moved down to E Sussex ...see more
I arrived accompanied by my father in 1955 not really knowing what to expect as I had been born and brought up in Jersey, which in those days was rather different to the mainland. My father, uncle and grandfather had all been to Stubbington and had told me tales of 'Monty' Foster who apparently had a fearsome reputation for strictness. My number was 22 and I still have my original school tie and the old ...see more
I lived in Stubbington from 1957 (when I was born - home birth in residence behind newsagents on the green) until I was married in 1978. For most of my childhood until 10 yrs old we lived in the Post Office residence - shown in this photo. In this shot you can clearly see the bungalow to the side of the PO - which was demolished to build the chemist shown in other similar shot of the ...see more
I still have a fairly clear (?) recollection of my time at Stubbington. Includes - - The Spithead Review (for the Coronation) on board a paddle steamer and passing dancing Russians on board one of the Soviet Union's finest. - Coronation Day in the San with measles. Everone had a day at home. - swimming at Hillhead having been transported by HMRF's saloon car. Not sure whether swimming there was a ...see more
I am responding to a memory placed here by Peter Madden in 2010 - which I have just spotted. I was intrigued to read Peter Madden's memory of Stubbington. I was a contemporary of Peter's and recall that his school number was 50. Mine was 83. I seem to remember that he had a connection with Malta, but could be wrong. In addition to the characters that he mentions, there was Hugh Sarah ...see more

I was a pupil at Stubbington House from 1953 ‘till 1958 and my step-father, too, was in the Navy. It’s extraordinary to read the memories of those whose names are now starting to come back to me, particularly Fogarty and Madden. It has brought back so many memories which I had almost forgotten, although I cannot remember many of the masters’ names. I do, however, remember the headmaster, Foster, who ...see more
