More about this scene

The horizontal distribution of the buildings shows how the houses had to be built in terraces, thanks to the town's hilly location. Torquay's harbour is ever-popular as a tourist and marine resort. A pleasure boat prepares to leave the jetty steps, on the right- hand side of the photograph. The larger steamer passenger service, introduced seven years earlier, generally took about fourteen hours to make the trip to Bournemouth.
