More about this scene

This evocative photograph is taken west of Chertsey on the A30 London Road at its junction with Christchurch Road, the B389, which lies beyond the policeman on points duty and to the left of the white-painted building. This was built in the 1930s under the influence of the Modern Movement, and it is a building of surpassing ugliness; it has a café with a terrace, the Waterfall, and below a Rover and Jaguar car dealer, Gavin Fairfax. It survives as a Chiquito's Restaurant. Its style owes something to the Wentworth Estate to the south-west, where there are many houses in a similar style, but mostly better than this.
