More about this scene

A little further downstream we reach historic Wallingford, an Anglo-Saxon borough, much of whose 9th-century earthen ramparts remain. There are the earthworks also of the Norman castle in the north-east quarter of the town. Here the old town landing-stage is north of the bridge; the quay is much altered, with the boathouse now the Mill House pub.
