Bandon Hill - High View School Days

We lived over the Express Dairy (opposite the Odeon) My early school days started in 1937 when Bandon Hill Infants were at Milton Road - we moved to Milton Road in 1935. The 654 Trolley bus route was nearby and sometimes the conductor would take out a long pole from under the bus to relocate the overhead poles to the cables above. When our class went up to the Sandy Lane school the Second World War had just started and often we would sit for hours in the air raid shelters where previously had been the sports field. During one raid a bomb fell in Ross Parade and killed one of my friends - his surname I can only remember was Abbot. Later we went on to High View School in The Chase and would swap shrapnell shell cone heads and bullets collected from the previous night's air raids. When the war ended we were encouraged to take 'Holidays at Home' and in Mellows park... Read more

I went to Collingwood when Mrs Ingham was the head. The corporal punishment was at times severe. Another boy who was left handed was beaten and made to write with his right one.

We played football in Beddington Park - where is Mellows?

So Long, Beautiful Church

I may only be 30 and these pictures are before my time - but up until recently I lived in Wallington all my life and remember this beautiful church. Seems such a shame now that it is gone and there is a grotesque giant Sainsbury's in its place with an even worse eye-sore of a bus shelter which usually has mouthy chavs congregating by it!

Growing up in Wallington

I lived in Bute Gardens West, from Oct 1943 to when I married in 1965. My friends were Donald Scott, Rex Poge, Yashew, an immigrant boy who we nearly killed with a bow and arrow, and brother Dave. We had a club, The Silent Death, we called it the T>S>D>, and to join you had to do all sorts of stupid things like jump off Donalds garage roof, or kick a hat [with a brick underneath it!] funny, we only had 3 members...us. My Dad had a small flooring company called Patey & Sons, which later moved to 110 Stafford Road. Saturday mornings we went to the Saturday morning flicks at the Odeon. It cost sixpence but you could take your own torch, but don't get caught. Went fishing down Beddington Park, for sticklebacks and carried them home in a bucket. All dead by the Sunday morning. Went to the Grange for tortuous dental work, but later graduated to the butcher who opperated out of his bungalow on the corner of Demesne... Read more

When I attended Collingwood School for boys aged 7 to 11 we used to play football and cricket at Mellows Park, and I clearly remember going into the tea rooms many times to get a bun and a bottle of pop after practice. The Headmaster John Richardson was the best head I had throughout my entire schooling, very fair but firm.

Carolann Anscomb

My first girlfriend used to attend this school, and I used to run out of my school to go and meet her. We would often do our homework together at her parents' house. They were a lovely family, Bill and Ida Anscomb used to take Carol and I out for drives in the country and we would stop and have a picnic tea. In 1972 the four if us went on holiday to Benidorm, my first overseas holiday it was great and I still have very fond memories of those bygone days.
Carol became a very glamourous flight attendant and she married Peter Richards in 1978 and has two children.
In 1996 we met up again and for the next 4 years we remained close friends, but unfortunately lost touch again shortly after I moved to Worthing, which is one of my many regrets in life.
If you ever read this memoir Carol, please call me.

Childhood Memories

High Street c1965

When we lived in Wallington from 1965 to 1972, I remember going into Mantles the newsagent/sweetshop and buying sweets for my little brother and I.
The town hall and library are situated behind here and looking down the high street which has not changed a great deal to this day were all the shops and the railway station. Fond memories indeed of our years in Wallington.

Boys' Grammar School

I lived in the Clock House estate, nominally Coulsdon but easily accessible by bike to Foxley Lane and the 234a bus (single decker to get under Wallington railway bridge) to the boys' grammar school. I was there from 1955 to 1962 and although I thought that it might, in fact it did me no harm. In particular I remember the shop over the road from the school where it had a soda fountain (Pinches store?), you ordered a drink by value and currency e.g. 2d red, 3d green etc. with a packet of Oxo crisps and a sherbert fountain, what boy could ask for more? ROUNDSHAW

My mum found this site, and wow. I lived in Instone when I was 7 on the 9th floor with my mum, brother and sister, then we moved to Vulcan Close. We used to spend all our time over the field and on the decks, there used to be a van that sold sweets, papers, fags etc which my brother John worked on. Roundshaw was a fantastic place to live, I used to go to Roundshaw Junior School. We knew everyone on our deck which went down loads of stairs or a slope to the next deck which was Vulcan also. We knew loads of kids, plus the shops with the community hall and doctors below and of course the merry go round which burnt down. We moved away from Roundshaw when I was 13 years old and I am now 45 years old. I also went to Carshalton High School for Girls (but hated it). What lovely memories I have of my childhood there. I went back about 4... Read more

Demesne Road

I never actually lived in Wallington but had an aunt who lived there for many years. Her name was Mary and Joe Smith and had two kids called Paul and Denise. Joe was a scout leader. I spent many school holidays with the Smiths and loved every minute of it. Just reminiscing about going to Mellows Park and cant remember the name of the other park at the end of Demesne road. When I was old enough to travel on my own from Glasgow I was put on the train to Euston where my aunt would pick me up, It used to feel as if I was travelling to the other end of the world but enjoyed every minute of it, it made me feel grown up. I have many many memories of the place much so too many too mention but would like to thank the people of Wallington for adding to them. Must return someday to see how much the place has changed or hopefully not.

Growing up in Wallington

I moved to Osmond Gardens in Wallington when I was 4 years old. I went to Beddington Infants School, then Holy Trinity Primary School in Bute Road and finally Carshalton High School for Girls. Looking at all these photos and reading all the memories brings back my memories of growing up. My dad was a regular at the Melborne pub, opposite the station and also all the other pubs in the area. I also worked in the Greyhound pub in Carshalton and also the Fox and Hounds in Carshalton. When I was in my early twenties (I'm now 43), I worked and lived in Sutton. I visited Wallington about 6 or 7 years ago. It has changed so much but I still remember how it was in the 1970s when I was growing up. It's part of me!

Roundshaw

1975-1984 lived at 24 Vulcan Close remember the blue van and the football cards with the bubble gum very well! The 233 bus, swimming and Wilson's, knock down ginger, roller disco skates on the decks, moppit, the milk round with Brian, The Hadwins, George Derek, Michael and Debbie, the Copin's, Tina, Debbie, David, the Farmilos near the dairy shop, Gary Middleton, Marc Beech, Paul Bowman, Ian Mitchell, Lorna Eve, Lisa Jones, Tina Geary, Lawrence Francis, Netty (Annette), remember the fire on the fields in 1976 (the really hot summer), water fights with Fairy Liquid bottles! Raleigh Choppers chippers strikers, griffters, R/C Airplane models at the back of the fields, 1977 silver jubilee under the deck as it rained on that day, playing up at the woods near plough lane. The air raid shelter. Mr Oliver the caretaker at the junior school, riding home made go karts along the big slopes. Winning a silver medal for cross country at the play centre Tony Ash won the gold. Wallington

I lived in Wallington in the late sixties early seventies. I lived at 7 The Mead and I spent some great years there. I went to Highview High School. There was always something to do and friends to hang out with. I loved Wallington, I still have a great friend who lives there. I used to hang out on Roundshaw estate and I know it got a bad reputation after some years.

1950's

I lived in Redford Avenue, Wallington when the road was a dead end with the old Croydon aerodrome at the end. I attended St Philomena's School in Carshalton. I came out to Australia in 1963 and have a son and a daughter and two grandsons. I am visiting England in September 2008 and will certainly walk up Redford Avenue with memories.

SANDY LANE NORTH

I moved to no. 6 from Thornton Heath, aged 3, with my parents, Sylvia and George. My maiden name was Ruthven. My brother Keith was born in 1958. I initially went to Bandon Hill school, but my brother got pneumonia just after his 1st birthday and they transferred me to High View, as there was lollipop lady and my mum wouldn't have to take me. One of my favourite memories is of Sunday School at the Methodist Church by Mellows Park. Our Sunday School teacher would regularly lay on tea and table-top games evenings in her home close to the church, which were terrific. I also loved going to Beddington Park and remember rowing in the boats by the Grange. Visiting my grandmother at Richmond Green in Beddington and going to Wandle Valley Park just along from there are also very happy memories, along with shopping and going to the cinema in Croydon. I remember the bread strike, but don't know what... Read more

Roundshaw

I lived on the Roundshaw estate through the 70's and have great memories of playing runouts. I knew every nook and cranny of that estate. I had many friends that lived on nearly every close. I lived in Wallington for nearly 20 years.  I loved going to Croydon shopping with my friends on a Saturday and walking across the fields at the back of the estate to the open air swimming pool, many a happy time there.  It has changed so much what with the new development. When I got married 26 years ago we ended up living on the 6th floor of Instone Close. It had a great view. We lived on the St Heliers estate for a while near the circle, then moved near to Bristol where I am now.
