The Town Park

The Pleasure Ground c1950

As a child in the late 1950's and early 1960's, I and a whole bunch of mates used to go to the Regal cinema on Saturday mornings. We went through the town park as the most direct route and would often stop off on the way back to fish for minnows and sticklebacks in the lake.

During the winter of the big freeze (1963 I think) the lake froze over and the sight of all that frozen water acted like a magnet. Before long we were out in the middle, completely ignoring the ominous creaking noises all around us. When the creaking started to sound more like cracking we finally started to take notice. It's strange how ice only seems to become slippery when you are frantically trying to get off it. Fortunately we all made it to the other side unscathed and dry.

RE: RE: The Town Park

I went to the Regal to see my first film, Bambi, with my Mum and Dad, then straight to the park for a picnic, one of my earliest memories!

The park was great fun in every season wasn't it!

RE: RE: The Town Park

Yes, the park was a great place, and still is.

I have an early memory of my Dad rowing us across the lake in one of those wooden rowing boats they used to have, but one of our favourite pastimes as kids was fishing.

We'd use black cotton with a small worm tied on the end and a piece of matchstick as a float. We would then fish for minnows and sticklebacks at the grass bank by the boathouse. I think that's where the water from the stream used to flow into the lake. The fish would be kept in a jam jar of lake water untill we moved on to another activity. Then the fish would be returned to the lake.........well........Mum wouldn't let us keep them in the bath at home.
