I loved my time at Warnham Court, I was there between 1956 to 1958 as best as I can remember. I have great memories of teachers and friends and the activities we took part in. It was a completely different life to what I had and will always cherish the wonderful memories I have.

The Old Days

I have great memorys as a kid, we moved to 11 Church Street in 1971, my dad taught me to ride a bike on the footpath the side of the vicar's house opposite the church where my dear old nan is. My dad Roger Stapley still lives in the village. My dad was a farmer who worked for the late Mr Lucas. My grandad Vern also still lives in the village, he used to work the farm in Church Street which is now a posh housing estate, such a shame. Such great memories, I wish I could go back just for one day. You're welcome to email me if you know my dad or grandad or wish to share your memories, thanks, Mark.

Wonderfull Days But Too Few

Hi, my name is Alan Sims, it could have been Morgan in 1953, I was there for two terms, I cannot remember too many names, Mr and Mrs Savage, so gentle after a tyrant of a teacher in London. I remember the Young Farmers Club and playing football on Front Court. My fondest memory was helping the woodwork teacher to finish buiding the stage in the hall, then one day he took me over to the piano and asked me to sing 'The Eings of a Dove', I was so shy but I had a go, then he said "You're in the next show as the crippled boy", I often think of him and thank him for his help. There's only a few names I remember in that show, a Miss Fowler, we used have some laughs about her boyfriend, I recall some thing about some keys in his pocket, then Miss Fox who had asthma like myself, and I think a Terry, it could be Bowler but I'm not... Hi, I remember Michael Lambert, Eric Cook, John Vosper, Bill and David. Me and Michael Lambert were in pantomime together. I was in Mr Macley's class and Miss William's class. I also remember Mr Savage the Headmaster. It was about 1963 and I remember my first day and as I walked out of the first meeting I can remember Mr Savage saying to Michael Lambert to look after Len and we were friends from that day on. I remember Eric Cook's nickname was WEED. They were the happiest days of my school years. I also remember being in the Black and White Minstrel Show even though I was tone deaf. And Mr Tows the woodwork teacher who lived in the village. Happy Days. I was in Bodiam for my first 2 years then I was in Lewes House.

Hello, my name is Elaine Pierson, it was Elaine Williams when I was at Warnham Court School. I was there for my special dietary needs. I can remember a boy called John Walls and he had a cousin there called Terry Gascoinge and also there was my friend called Susan Chattaway, she lived in Fulham in Clem Atlee Court with her mum, we made our holy communion together in Horsham parish church. I think John lived over east London. Mr King was the headmaster when I was there and there was a teacher called Mr Cooper. If anyone remembers me please get in contact. I am married with 2 children of my own, a son who is 23 and a daughter who is 21. I would love to here from anyone who remembers me, thanks.

My memories of Warnham are happy ones, I too was sent from London at the time I believe it was because of my health as my Dad had TB and I was tested and proved positive, so had to leave the family home. I was in Wren dormitory and in Lewes house, my favourite teacher at the time was Miss Margaret Bradford and she married Mr Berry. There was a girl called Pippa (philipa) my best friend she had asthma. Would love to hear from anyone else who may still be around, my name at the time was Stammers.

I can't believe this, amazing even if the names are coincidence, I was at Warnham Court 1962-63, I can remember lots of names: Roy Riggs, with his 'German' dictionary. June Palmer. John Thorp, we were always fighting. John McDade, good footballer and cricketer. Kathy Petty. Helen - sorry, can't remember last name. Eric Cook. Stanley Babbage. David and Janet Lever. Keith Hollis. and a young Indian lad whose real name I never knew (sorry) but he had the bed next to me, and we played checkers every night, he always won, we all called him 'Gunga Dinn', it was nothing racist back then, he was a friend. But I don't remember a David and Bill Dundridge, but, and here's the amazing thing, I know a Dave and Bill Dundridge, I have known them since I was about 14 years old, still do, Dave and I are good friends, if they are the same Dave and Bill, I had no idea they were at Warnham Court, I'll have to get in touch with them (we have lost touch in the last 3/4 years)... My Dad's School Days at Warnham Court School

Hi Dad went there when he was about 10 years old, and I think back again at 13-ish, from 1953-1956-ish, I may have got the years slightly out. My dad, John Fitzpatrick, was telling me all about his memories of this school, does anyone remember him? He recalls having amazing times and getting up to all sorts. Again, as others have said, lots of kids went there from London, any memories of meeting him appreciated or knowing him or other teachers at that time.

Warnham Court 1950-53

I have read a memory on this website of someone who was sent to Warnham Court as a child but does not really know why. I was sent there under identical circumstances. So like this other contributor I would be very interested to know the actual reason for children being sent there and what role Warnham Court played. I know there were three houses known as Arundel, Bodium and Lewes. I can't remember which I was in but I can vividly remember Mr Savage as being the headmaster I suppose, and him wearing a thick grey suit. Also trips into Horsham with other children of course.
I can also recall a boy called Callaghan who had a Timex watch which I loved and sometimes he would loan it to me. This boy was in the next bed to me but cannot recall any other boys' names at the time or the name of the dormitory I was in, if in fact there were names for... Read more

Hi Vic, thanks for your comments.

Were you in Bodium the blue house? And what dormitory were you in? Were you under Miss Mcrae or Miss Geddis?
Re David and Bill Dundridge, I also knew them at Wanstead House, Cliftonville maybe around 1960 before I went to Warnham Court. It would be an amazing coincidence if it is them that you know now! My memories of Warnham Court are also vague now but it is great to reminisce with someone who knows people I remember! Eric Cook was my best friend! Warnham Court were also my best school days.

School Life

I went to Warnham from 1967-1970. It was the best time of my school life, it has left quite an impression on me. We had pantos, and a couple of balls, I can remember on one occasion someone had a field mouse and kept it in his dorm. We never went home in half term and we had trips to Dorking and Chanctonbury Rings near Worthing. I also got caught running in the out of bounds area which was the dogs' graves (they are still there). I remember the Young Farmers' Club and the plucking of chickens for Christmas that were sold, and not forgetting Nellie (the pig). There is so much, I could go on forever.

Warnham Village Hall

Nice to see the old village hall again, I used to go with my mum to Mothers Club in the 1960s and lots of jumble sales, church bazaars, barn dances and even football training. At some jumble sales we used to try and climb in the toilet window to avoid paying the admission fee. It was such a shame the hall was pulled down in the 1970s. It was built by Sir Henry Harben on C. T. Lucas's land in the 1880s and today it's now a row of 1970s-style houses. Anybody who has memories of Warnham and wants to share them, please email me, I still live in the village in Bell Road.

Ends Place

I too remember Ends Place from the early 1970s. The old Dear (how rude) as you put it was Mrs Gregson who did not suffer fools gladly but only ever showed me kindness and charm. I would visit her each Friday lunchtime for a chat and to pass the time of day. I would walk through this amazing house in my stocking feet so as not to mark the highly polished floors. Mrs G would usually be sitting in front of a roaring fire with her terriers keeping her company. After our chat I would go to the kitchen and Annie the cook who was kindness personified would give a slice off meat of the top of a roast between to hunks of bread and butter, heaven. Christmas treats were Annie's all butter pastry mince pies. I remember two or possibly three cleaners that Mrs G kept. All of which seemed to have sucked a lemon or two by their demeanour.
George was the groom as Mrs G kept a... Read more

I remember being sent to Warnham Court in Horsham as a young child. I lived in London at the time and I really don't know why I was sent there. I have had conflicting information that I may have been sick and was sent to the country for the fresh air or perhaps I was just unruly.  I have found out that Warnham Court was run by the then Greater London Council and I have very fond memories of the place. I remember playing in the woods and digging artillery/bullets out of the clay mounds and was told that the army used the grounds for training. Can anyone help me shed some light on what Warnham Court was used for?

Caryll Chapel

My husband and I came to Sussex in April 2005 tracing my Caryll/Caryl ancestry. We took a bus from Brighton to Warnham, when we arrived in Warnham, I asked the driver where St. Margaret's Church was. He motioned up around the corner. When we got off the bus, the church bells were ringing. We walked up to the church and a vicar let us in. When he learned of my Caryl ancestry, he gave us a special tour of the chapel and the church. It was a very special visit and I felt like I had come back to my roots. He mentioned that he had something for me at his house, and returned with a book he had bought at a flea market with a lot of my Caryll history. The bell ringer was a visitor who had just happened to stop by, but I knew that it was really my Caryll ancestors welcoming me back... and wondering why it took me so long to come back! I know... I can remember visiting Warnham when I was very young, with my parents and brother Ron. We stayed with great uncle John, who was blind. I believe his wife's name was May, but  I am not  sure. My brother kicked a football into the broad beans, and upset great uncle John. I was rather frightened when we had to sleep in a room with a picture of Captain Blood on the wall, and so my mum turned the picture round. I believe the house was in Friday Street. I hope to visit Warnham in August to visit the church and look around the cemetery. My maiden name was Coleman, and my gran's maiden name was Sarah Street.

I attended Warnham Court when it was a school.  It remained a very good school right through to the 1990s when it was closed and revamped in a rather horrid way and sold off as individual flats.. some houses were built on what used to be our classrooms and others built along the beautiful drive that had a fantastic pinetum on either side of it.  It was surrounded by the beautiful deer park.. I can almost hear the deer rutting.
It had a fascinating ice house and mesmerising sunken gardens and statues of Pan in the terraces and gardens.  I also remember palm trees growing and huge Canadian redwoods and an ancient cork tree!
I really miss my days from school.  I have a site for ex Warnham Court Pupils and their families, teachers and staff.

I believe my grandparents worked at Warnham Court during this period. I have some photos of the staff and house etc. My grandfather's name was Arthur Butler.

Childhood Adventure

I'm not prepared to reveal my real name online, however I was a child during the 70's the duration of which was spent in Warnham. This house belonged to some old dear I met only a couple of times, she was housebound and terribly old. She was cared for by the mother of my schoolfriend, whose name I also shan't reveal online. However I spent many, many days playing in and around this house. What a delight to see it again after all this time!

It was demolished sometime during the 1980s, as far as I'm aware, or soon after. I recollect it was full of wood panelling, the hallway and staircase were a sight to behold. It had games rooms, and all sorts. I'm sure I remember a billiard room. The kitchens were huge. I recall two massive old-fashioned Agas. Of course, being staff (and in my case, guests of staff) we were generally confined to the back areas of the house, with the occasional request by the... Read more

I think you were very good friends with Louise Hume at the time who was dating Larry Eden. Other names I remember are Tony Geoghegan, Sylvia Burke, Anita Brogan, Andrew Ross. There are so many memories of Warnham. Horsham cinema on a Saturday. Young Farmers Club with Nellie having her litter of pigs. Walking down to the deer park gates every morning. So many memories of Mr King and Alan Cooper. One of my special memories is of the bike holiday rides we had staying at all the youth hostels one summer. Did you ever go back for a reunion? I wish I had. Very happy days though.... Read more

Warnham During WW2

Warnham Court.

Unsure when it was requisitioned but from October 1943, under the control of Major R.H. Egdell (of the Special Operations Executive's EU/P (Polish) Section), it was used for training men from the Polish Independent Company Grenadiers (and elsewhere) to be parachuted into France and elsewhere to help release Polish prisoners of war (Operation BARDSEA) and other missions.

The team commander was codenamed "Kunegunda". They consisted of Polish teams of five soldiers - codenamed "Adam", "Bolek", "Cyryl", "Dawid" ["David"], "Edek", "Felek", "Genek", "Henio", "Jasiu", "Karol" ["Charles"], "Leon", "Marek" ["Mark"];
3 American teams - codenamed "Dodford", "Datchet", "Darowes";
1 English team - codenamed "Dunchurch" - which included instructors STS 63 (3 officers and 12 sergeants)
Altogether there were 23 officers and 63 privates. (Email communication with Steven Kippax)

There was an extensive firing range in the grounds.

Might anyone be able to add to the story?

WCS..a Great Place to Be!

My name is Linda Ashton and I was at WCS 1960-61. This was my 4th boarding school and was far and away the happiest! It felt like family with Mr and Mrs Savage as surrogate mum and dad! I was there because of chronic asthma. My best friend was Lizzie Thompson, and I also remember Richard Cook, Wallie, Alice, Margaret...to name but a few. I was in the panto Cinderella and also in the Black and White Minstrel show. I loved the clubs, and went to soft-toy making, flower making, gym (broke my arm doing long-fly!!), dancing, drama and others. I remember the tuck shop, the trips into Horsham, the deer park, and just loved the beautiful grounds. I think I was in Larch dorm (although not 100\% sure) and in Bodiam house. I was in Mr Mackley's class, and remember doing projects about water, trees and European countries (still have the exercise books in the loft somewhere!) School Memories

Elizabeth Wall, do you remember me, John McDaid? I was team leader of Bodiam in 1963 and Derek White was my best friend.

Very Fond Memories

I was at Warnham Court in 1963.
I remember David Knowles (from Balham), Irene Bone, Derek (tall & red-haired), John McDade, Irene Bone (who was friends with a Jean), two girls called Rita (one on whom had severe asthma) and Miss Bendy and Miss Raines (housemothers), a Scottish head housemother (?Mrs Mac), headmaster Mr Savage, and deputy Miss Bradford or Bradfield. Also, two teachers ?Mr Wheeler & ?Mr Savage.
I was very frightened when I first arrived at Warnham but it turned out to be the best thing that had happened to me.
The evening "clubs" - old-time dancing, "keep fit" with Miss Bendy - and, most of all, the Saturday afternoons in Horsham and the Saturday night dancing.
Brilliant!

My Memory of Warnham Court

My name was Pat Dean in my days at Warnham Court. Mr and Mrs Savage were in charge. Mr Berry was our teacher, his wife was there also. We had a lovely housemother named Miss Reed and my friends' names were Eddie Croxford, Sylvie Twelvetree, Anne Williams and Marie Biargi (?), and others whose names I cannot remember. I often sit and think of the fun we had there. I also remember the Deers tuck shop, the 'rec, midnight feasts. In the summer we were given two dresses, I always remember them, one was blue with white spots and the the same but yellow, and when we went home they let us take one to keep. I was in Lewes team. I'm now married with three children. We have been back a couple of times to see Warnham but not recently. If any of my friends remember me it would be good to know how your life has been.

1964 1965

Hi, great memories of Warnham Court. I was caught smoking by Mr Savage and as head girl of Bodiam I also took a few kids scrumping and the police were brought in. I also ran away back to Greenwich to see my sick dad. We were in Horsham watching 'Ferry Across The Mersey' and friends gave me some money for the train fare. I changed out of my grey and bergandy uniform, put my hair down and my knee high boots on and got on the train...Long story.... but when I got back to Warnham Court I did the best I could and in the end was very sad to leave there. I was sent there origanilly because I had lost a lot of time off school being a chronic asthmatic. I am now living in Australia... have 16 grandchildren and would love to hear from anyone who remembers me...

Bet Time Ever

I was sent to Warnham Court about 1953. Mr Savage was the head master. I can remember a boy called Ernie and one called John Knowland. I was understudy to a boy called ? Green who played Widow Twankey in the panto. I was head boy. I won top prize in woodwork, it was the happiest time of my school life and would love to hear from any one who remembers me. Tony Jeffery

"Life Was so Sweet"

What a year 1961 was for me. Like others before me I arrived at Warnham not knowing what to expect but found a place of peace for the first time in my life where I was treated with kindness. When we arrived Ernest Savage and his wife Margariet greeted everyone in the hall and then we were whisked off by Miss Western and Miss Bedford for something to eat and then a bath before being given our school uniforms. Does anyone have any pictures of the twice yearly pantos put on by Miss Bedford? Maureen Downley and I were in 'Robin Hood.'

I also have memories of the tuck shop and 'the jungle' and being a young farmer. "O yes!" - Does anyone remember being caught smoking in the cinema? I lost the Captaincy of Bodium for a month after being caught and I haven't smoked since. I wrote to Mrs Savage many years ago just to say how wonderful I... Read more

Warnham Court During WW2

During the years 1942/3, as a young boy, I and my family lived just aross the road from Warnham Court, I went to school in Broadbridge Heath.

We had come to live in the area because my father Eric Luffman who worked for the Ministry of Supply was stationed at Warnhan Court. I don't know much about what he did other than he was working with others on the interception of German radio traffic. My father was killed in a traffic accident in 1943, so I have never been able to find out much about his work - if anybody can help me with details, I would be very grateful to hear from you.

Warnham Court School 1954 - 1958

I spent four plus very happy years at Warnham Court School. I was asthmatic (still am) and was sent from London with many other children. The Headmaster was Ernest Savage. I have so many fond memories of my time there. The Young Farmers Club (I was secretary), the tuck shop, the Saturdays in Horsham at the pictures, the dancing, the pantomimes. Everything was just great and most of us were all very happy. I was in Lewes House. If anyone remembers me please get in touch. What about the late night jaunts into the deer park to find the hoard of deer antlers?

Best Years of my Life

I was given the esteemd position of preparing Mr Savage's toast of an evening for him. I was first in Mr Mackley's calss, then in Miss Bradford's. The guys and girls that I remember being there at the same time as myself are Kathleen Black, Maureen Downey, Derek White, John Riley, Duncan White, Elizabeth Taylor.

My Time at Warnham Court .

At that time we had a wonderful teacher called Miss Alllen, I think she married the teacher at the time who looked after the young farmer, I think his name was Mr Woodcook. We sat at dinner next to Mr and Mrs Savage, our table was on the left. My very close mate was Terry Bellamy who very sadly passed away when we had a term break. I remember the old tuck shop, plus every Saturday collecting our savings to go into Horsham on the old bus, we would do a bit of shopping and sometimes would walk back. There were also guys from my old school, Charlton open in Charlton plus a few I knew at Wansted House, Margate. I was priviledged to teach at Warnham Court School 1966-7. We spent a lot of time exploring the countryside and doing pond dipping - getting out wellies good and wet! The students in my class found writing difficult but we wrote books and poems. It was my first year of teaching and I found the days long - from breakfast supervision to lights out' on the dormitory floor. I can still remember the aroma of Mr Savages's cigar! I have many photos still, and can recall some of the students: Gyllian Wyatt,Rosemary White, Leslie Shaw, Vicky Bourassa,Julie Turner helping with the tuck shop, Nellie the pig, and the field trips. I had a year contract and then left for Canada to teach Indians in the Yukon Arctic. I have fond memories of Warnham Court - the school renunion page is a great idea. It would be great to see what happened to all the students after Warnham - I'm sure they did well. Best wishes, Dr David Ford.

Pearl Huntley

My name is Pearl and surname was Huntley when I was at Warnham Court. The memories of my two terms there are of a magical place with deer and llamas and a HUGE fat black cat called Dina or Dino. I played the part of Aladin in a big production panto at the school around 1960 or 1961. I will try to find the one and only photo I had taken.

I recently took a detour to look at the place now and it still invoked wonderful memories of the time I spent there.

My Years at Warnham

My name is John Herron, I attended the school between 1970-1974 and still have fond memories of my days at the school. I remember the headmaster Mr King, my English teacher Mr Cooper, my geography teacher Mr Ward, Mrs Pillow, and I also remember some of the ex-pupils, Doreen Kirlew, Patrick Worrell, Hussein Ejvet and brother Izzy, Carol Wood, Gary and Stephen Bartlett, if any of you people are still around it would be nice to hear from some of you at this e mail add i e john at

Warnham Court

My name is Angie, I was in Warnham Court only for a short while, but I have lasting memories - the grey and burgandy uniform, and walking down to the deer park before breakfast. I haven;t yet found anyone that remembered me. I had a photo taken of me as a Chinese boy dressed for panto. If anyone has one I would love to have it, it would be the only picture I have of me as a child. Warnahm gave me a sense of belonging, a great memory. I loved it there even though it was short. I thank all who looked after me. Special thanks to Mr and Mrs Savage.

My Fond Memories of Warnham Court School.

Hello, my name is Christine Parsons but I was known by my maiden name of Morley when I attended Warnham, it seems like only yesterday I was there. I was sent there seemingly by the Greater London Council as both my parents were sick and at that time found it difficult to care for me, although all turned out well after I left school. What a wonderful place it was and Mr and Mrs Savage, the headmaster and his wife, were great people. I remember them with great fondness. When I first arrived at the school I remember being extremely frightened and missed home terribly. I remember a boy named Brian coming over to talk to me then a Michael Long. Michael and I ended up having a bit of a crush on each other. Maureen Lehey comes to mind, Caroline and I'm sure Yusef had just started as I was leaving. I left in 1961. I remember the trips on the rocketty old bus to Horsham and the cinema... Read more

OMG, I have been trying to find out what happened too, you don't know me as Pat Sykes, my maiden name was Reynolds (I used to have ginger hair), we used to be quite good friends, and visited one another in the holidays when you lived at the Highways. You used to go out with Roy Crump, I seem to remember. What are you doing in Germany? You sent me a card from there, was it nannying you were doing? Are you married and do you have any children? As you can see I am, I've got 2 grown up children aged 31 and 27, my son got married last year and my daughter still lives at home. There are quite a few of us who are on Facebook, some you might know, Leslie Rawl for one, and Sue Saunders, she is trying to organise a reunion again this year, would you be able to come? Have alook at the site, hope to hear from you soon.

Good Old Days

Hi,
I, Joyce, was at Warnham from 1967 - 1972. My friends were Glen True, Peter Stoodly, Roy Crump, Yusuf and many more who I cannot remember. Our English teacher was Alian Cooper who also did the disco on Saturday evening after we had been to the cinema. Our other friend was 'Nelly the Pig'. Our last headmaster was Mr King. I would love to hear from anybody so please get in touch. I have lived in Germany since I left Warnham after the summer holiday in 1972, so it's 37 years now.
Hope to hear from anybody.

Building Relocated

Cottages in North Street 1907
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

Around the 1920s this building was known as Perry's Place and was located diagonally opposite the Black Jug, known then as the Hurst Arms. It was dismantled and moved to nearby Mannings Heath. It now forms the clubhouse and is called Fullers. A stunning web site featuring photos of Horsham comparing them to the Frith originals is at www.hiddenhorsham.co.uk

A View Over Horsham

This view has changed little over the intervening years. The church, St Mary's, at the foot of the Causeway is Horsham's only grade I listed building. In the background there was a multistorey office block which has now been removed to be replaced with modern but fitting office blocks occupied by Royal & Sun Alliance.

St Mary's Church at The Foot of The Causeway

St Mary's Church 1891
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

The church has been extended in recent years by a 'block' (blot?) on the nearest corner of this photo. Although a nice building in its own right it does not fit in with the style of the church. St Mary's C of E primary school now occupies a site to the right of this image. To the extreme left is a plot in the graveyard devoid of headstones. This is where the bodies of hanged convicts were laid to rest. Another gravestone at the front of the church lays North/South, not the usual East/West. This is the grave of a Muslim, later Catholic woman named Helena Bennett of Indian descent, abandoned by her French husband the Comte de Boigne. She died in 1854.

Flagstones

This property is known as Flagstone and is at the foot of the Causeway, next to St Mary's Church. It is dated 1615 on the centre gable, this is thought to relate only to that part of the buidling. The main building may be up to 200 years older. In around 2000 the building was extensively renovated but retains its extenal apprearance and internal character. See more on www.hiddenhorsham.co.uk

The Pyramid Roof Has Gone!

East Street 1891

This is the view from near the iron railway bridge (built c1859) looking back towards the town. The pyramid shaped roof was in place up until the end of WWII. Between then and now it has been removed but I do not know why! Have a look at www.hiddenhorsham.co.uk/9/9.htm to see how it looks today. The site is occupied by Sussex Blinds.
