Childhood

Manchester Ship Canal c1960

My friend and I would await the arrival of American ships on their way to Manchester. We would shout "got any gum chum?!" to the crews. We would occasionally be rewarded by a packet of sweets being thrown from the ship. Far tastier than the English equivalent!

RE: RE: Childhood

I also did what Harry did, I lived just down the road from the locks, and as soon as we heard the ship's horn blow, to allow it to pass through the Latchford Swing Bridge, we hurried with gangs of other kids to the locks. We could tell by the sound of the ship's horn if it was a Yank or not!
